Pluto conservat omnia, mozaic
Alexey Lunev, Małgorzata Mycek, Raman Tratsiuk, Katarzyna Wojtczak
The Mosaic Project „(Deus) Pluto conservat omnia” is a collective project with artists from Poland and Belarus. The project refers to the idea of reclaiming our common place by using the technique of mosaic which was widely used as a part of propaganda mechanism in countries of Eastern Europe, still visible in post-soviet architecture landscape. Mosaics became Soviet officials' public art of choice after 1918.
The Mosaic „(Deus) Pluto conservat omnia” was created by artists who belong to the LGBTQ+ community which is marginalized and still criminalized in most countries of Eastern Europe.
Mosaic was a part of the DOMIE’s external wall of the building where its community practice takes place since 2018 in the city of Poznań. At the time of taking over the building was a ruin, and in 2023 it still is. DOMIE’s building was decided to be preserved as a ruin. To root in the uprooted.
Preservation of a ruin, not a renovation of the building, as a notion of care, claiming our political territory in a tangible way of ruination.
To build an equal community by creating visible traces of our presence means to construct our shelters. Manifesting the counter public by creating an emblem of our presence in the public space. „We have to build our own buildings when the world doesn’t accommodate us.” (Sara Ahmed, Feminist Killjoy). The Mosaic Project is based on the idea of treating DOMIE's building as an art medium and preservation of the building as a notion of care.
There is no public monuments of LGBTQ+ community in Poland. In 2021 1/3 of Poland country signed the „anti-LGBT zones” alliance. In 2023 we created the migrating mosaic which will be on tour in 2024. By using mosaic craft we queered the technique to create our own propaganda - of an equal and open society, as the Polish - Belarusian artistic coalition.
The mosaic was previously supposed to be done directly on the external wall of the building and played a role of public monument. However, in the process of changes regarding our building and the poor condition of the wall we transformed our initial idea into a migrating mosaic, made on moveable panels in the complete shape and size of the DOMIE’s wall.
In the Mosaic design we created our own symbolism: Pluto, sickle, a worker under the motto „(Deus) Pluto conservat omnia” written by Aleksey Lunev. Our world is floating in space. Pluto, a dwarf planet, in 2006, was excluded from being a planet by the International Astronomical Union. Pluto was downgraded, its position was lowered and was no longer considered a planet. It became the symbol of LGBTQ+ - Pluto is queer!
In Greek mythology Pluto was the ruler of the Greek underworld, a god of wealth due to the mineral wealth found underground, and ruled the deep earth that contained the seeds necessary for a bountiful harvest. The new beginning. (Deus) Pluto conservat omnia! (lat. Pluto preserves all!)
Queering the symbols of workers, such as an androgynous worker who holds a sickle (designed by Małgorzata Mycek) and the two-headed sickles drifting in space (crafted by Raman Trarusiuk). A sickle as a symbol of femininity, regeneration, a „cutting” of the past and embracing a new beginning as a feminist society based on trust, care and equality.
