The important background for the idea of 100 Flags - was an interesting social situation in 2018, in which the amount of celebrations, holidays, marches, exhibitions, articles, reconstructions and other initiatives on the topic of independence - literally occupied the whole public sphere. All this was taken very seriously, the whole narration space was taken by historical-national narratives and right -wing oriented historical policy.
„100 for 100” became the perfect key that was opening all the doors with public fundings for various fields.
Our project had one main goal: to remind about equally momentous, but yet, forgotten anniversary of the 100th year of women's electoral rights, which fell on November 28, 2018.
The idea arose from the fear that such event might be totally erased and forgotten.
We decided to establish a collective consisting of friends. Since most of us are working in areas related to art so it was natural to use the language of art to manifest this anniversary. Both the title and the form (flags) were assumed to be somewhat ironic reference to the celebration of the centenary of regaining independence.
From the very beginning we knew that we want to treat this holiday as a holiday for us all - regardless of gender, views, social status, place of origin or place of residence. It was very important for us to be seen. We considered the joint march with flags along the main streets of Warsaw at the round anniversary as an action that perfectly fits to our concept. It seemed to us that the most democratic form of invitation to participate, would be an open call addressed to everyone: every sex, social group, regardless of their education and profession, in one word - to every creative person who identified with the project. "Flag" was the main idea; we did not expect any specific form, we only called for releasing each
one’s fantasy, to create works in reference to the anniversary individually or in groups. We had no ambition to curate or supervise this project in any way.
The number of people who responded to our open call and took part in the march exceeded our wildest expectations. As a result, by March 2019, more than 220 flags were created by over 270 people from all over Poland, and actually from around the world, because the flags came, among others from Kenya, Brazil, China, the Netherlands and Germany. The number of flags is still rising.
On the wave of growing interest in our initiative, inspired by all the flags sent to us , we decided to prepare an exhibition program that started immediately after the planned march. In this way, we wanted to show flags to a wider audience, honor all creators, and give residents of other cities the opportunity to see them.
Flags were shown for the first time at BWA gallery - it was a spontaneous and performative event that took place on November 11, 2018, during the independence march in Warsaw, that became the biggest far right/fascist march in Europe. Then, on November 24th, 2018, the flags set off together on a march, the route of which led through Krakowskie Przedmieście, from Zygmunt's Column to the Exhibition Office, where they were presented until March 8, 2019. During the winter of 2018/2019, a symbolic representation of flags occurred at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (as part of the 'Independent' exhibition curated by Marta Lipska in the Museum on the Vistula) and lokal_30 (at the closing of the 'Prêt-à-porter' exhibition). Another show took place at the Awangarda Gallery in Wrocław (BWA Wrocław, 32 Wita Stwosza Street). The exhibition was entirely developed by students of Mediation of Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, was open from April 4 to May 12, 2019. Then the works were presented at the Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź (May 17 - July 31, 2019). The Łódź exhibition was curated by Marta Kowalewska and the 100 FLAG collective.
