Piotr Makowski
The central theme of the latest Makowski works is a reflection about colour, gesture and its compositions potentials, especially the building up of a painting though the contrast of these primal elements. The each painting prepared for the show can be read as a separate story. The arrangements of certain elements in some compositions can be associated with the portraits however, according to the intention of the author, the canvases are in the end abstract forms without direct references to figuration. This presentation is the continuation of the last few years of work in which Makowski has been developing his “visual language” and vocabulary that combine the representation of formal aspects of painting, abstraction, linear, draughtsmanship and gesturalism. Although the method of composing is very traditional, it reveals at the same time the artists' respect and fairly acknowledged approach to the matter of painting.

Witek Orski
Orski's art practice can be identified as post-conceptual photography. His carefully created photographic images, which often become parts of photo-objects or installations, are dedicated to theoretical research into such questions as: the nature of photographic picture, identity, mutual relation between death and imaging, the ideology of the gaze or landscape as an instrument of power.
According to his own words, Orski considers the photographs of objects, bodies or landscapes that he takes as “means of philosophical investigation”.

Jiří Thýn
Jiří Thýn is usually described as photographer in that he primarily uses the medium of photography for his work. However, what he does is to examine the definition and the wider possibilities of this medium. In his Drawings by Light, for example, he uses stencils to create incredibly delicate geometric shapes by exposing photopaper. In his series Consciousness as a Fundamental Attribute, photographs are shot, then parts are removed or objects are added and then reshot in a layering, adding and removing process which treats the medium as a sculptural process. In fact sculptural works are an integral part of his practice and are exhibited with his photography, both as independent works standing outside the photographs but also as part of the photographs own presentation.

*****

“Friend of a Friend” (FOAF) project sees eight important and thriving Warsaw contemporary art galleries sharing their exhibition spaces with international guests. A dialogue with galleries from the Czech Republic, France, Germany, United States, Switzerland and Great Britain lies at the foundation of group shows featuring Polish and international artists.

The idea of “FOAF” refers to London’s “Condo” initiative held since 2016. Based on the principle of friendly collaboration (and not competition, often associated with the art market), the event not only succeeds in establishing an innovative platform to present contemporary art, but also an exchange model that provides an alternative to art fairs. By bringing this model to Warsaw, “FOAF” offers the local audience the possibility to view works created by international artists (often unexhibited in Poland so far) and compare their achievements with works by their Polish colleagues. In turn, foreign guests (gallerists, artists, as well as collectors, curators and journalists) are given an opportunity to discover the Warsaw art scene.
