Lada Nakonechna, Zhanna Kadyrova "Experiments"

Lada Nakonechna and Zhanna Kadyrova are among the most intriguing artists of Ukraine’s young generation. Over the past 10 years they have honed their own individual careers, while simultaneously working actively within the R.E.P. artistic group. The group was forged on the heels of the Orange Revolution as a “Revolutionary Experimental Space” that took up social and political issues, while introducing contemporary art practices to the conservative Ukrainian scene.

Work tables are strewn with fragments of photographs depicting ruins. Piles of rubble, planks and trash are built up into a single, amorphous mass that steadily approaches abstraction. Lada Nakonechna works with former battle sites, attempting to revert them back to some kind of rational form, something that would contain a speck of utility. This attempt to repair reality, creating in the proces photographic compositions that are ultimately reminiscent of Soviet constructivism, proves entirely futile.

For the show exhibited at Kiev’s Pinchuk Art Centre in 2014, Zhanna Kadyrova created a series of panoramas of Kiev. The rhythm of a city full of smoking chimneys and construction cranes appears undisturbed, except for a series of explosions that mar the clear, blue sky. Is it a show of fireworks or a missile attack? In reality, the explosions are the effects of nitric acid corrosion. Kadyrova replicates the experiment upon a panorama of Warsaw. The effect is equally uncanny and menacing.

Nakonechna and Kadyrova have previously exhibited their work in Poland, as part of such shows as “Angry Birds” (2012) and “If Two Seas Were to Meet” (2015) at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, “Ukrainian News” Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw (2013), and at the Labirynth Gallery in Lublin with “R.E.P. 10 Years. On the Method” (2014).

Zhanna Kadyrova (born 1981) graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev. She works in installation, sculpture, photography and performance. In 2013 she was awarded the PinchukArtCentre Prize, and one year later, the Special Prize of the Future Generation Art Prize. She has exhibited her works at the55th and  56th Biennale of Art (Ukraine Pavilion), the Badischer Kunsverein in Karlsruhe.

Lada Nakonechna (born 1981) studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kiev. She works in drawing, objects, installations and actions in the public space. In 2013 she was awarded the PinchukArtCentre Special Prize. In 2014, she was awarded the Kazimierz Malewicz prize, organized by the Polish Institute in Kiev. She has exhibited at the National Art Museum of Ukraine (Kyiv), Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (Germany) and at Eigen+Art in Berlin.
