WGW 2015: Ewa Axelrad "Minimum, Necessary, Objectively Reasonable"

After a very well-received exhibition Warm Leatherette in 2013 (selected works were also presented, e.g., at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Torun's Centre for Contemporary Art and, most recently, in Beijing as part of an exhibition curated by the team at the Lodz Art Museum), Ewa Axelrad returns to Warsaw for her latest show. The show is a reaction to the international wave of protests exploding and intensifying across the world. It is also an attempt to consider the ways in which the individual can be pacified and how order is instated upon other demonstrations of the sort. Axelrad is far from a political activist in the literal sense, she's interested, rather, in examining the complex motives that drive protesters, as well as those that motivate representatives of the status quo. Within her sculptural objects and installations, the artist builds strong image-metaphors, which locate and unveil a paradoxical set-up - whereupon, in response to conflict, our need for personal security and clear-cut definitions evolve into self-repression. This is where Axelrad takes up the topics that intrigue her the most: relations between the visual sphere and today's techniques of repression, and those between hygiene and discipline, and the social order. At the same time, she seeks out evidence of the impression that global processes make on the individual experience, most of all, at the level of the individual body.

Ewa Axelrad - born in 1984, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan and the Royal College of Art in London. Her works are based in installation, spatial objects, photography and video, which often take on the nature of a site-specific intervention.
