Adam Adach

Painter. Born 1962 in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, lives and works in Warsaw and Paris. Obtained a veterinary degree in Warsaw before emigrating to France in the late 1980s. While abroad, he completed the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Lyon (1990) and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA) in Paris (1995). Adach was nominated for The 2007 Marcel Duchamp Prize.

„In his paintings Adam Adach explores both personal and historical memory. In his pieces, personal themes often based on memories from childhood intertwine with references to history and collective experience. The artist draws inspiration from anonymous photographs, press clippings, book illustrations, scenes he himself recorded using his photo camera or in his sketchbook. Though almost entirely lacking narration, Adach's paintings do manifest a kind of emblematic anecdotal quality.”
Ewa Gorządek, "Adam Adach", culture.pl, 2008

„Adach’s figures frequently find themselves in one way or another in suspension. They wait. The active, goal- orientated person remains absent. One can therefore read these images as a counterpoint to Socialist Realism. Under that aesthetics regime the cheerful worker valiantly takes his own fate in hand, while here he is an activist on call. Adach’s painting appears to seep out of the cracks in consciousness; it has more to do with a dream world than with concrete memory. The milky yet intense light underlines this characteristic. It is suggestive of dusk, of the gradual shift between seasons; of unclear times shaped by transition, and sometimes also by upheaval.”
Ralf Schluter, “Adam Adach”, “Polish! Contemporary Art from Poland”, 2011
