Little Warsaw

András Gálik (*1970) and Bálint Havas (*1971), who had spent their childhood of the 70's and 80's in communist Hungary, began their collaboration in the late 1990. Since the their travel to Warsaw in 1996 they have called themselves Little Warsaw, a title they have given their collaborative activities.
The focus of their work is a visual language that deals with collective consciousness or sub-consciousness of the society. In their videos, installations and performances they use symbols of power referring to national values. Torn from their primeval context they grow new meanings.
The projects of Little Warsaw were exhibited at the Venice Biennial (2003), the Berlin Biennial (2001) and at many curated shows. Their work is widely presented throughout Europe and in the United States in highly estimated institutions such as the Stedelijk Museum - Amsterdam, GFZK - Leipzig or the Apex Art Gallery in New York.
In recent years the expressive forms of intervention, which are radically applied by Little Warsaw, have apparently opened new ways of interpretation. In the politics of collective memory, which was under investigation even before, now the position of the individual is emphasized. The person, through its own feelings and physical sensations – experienced via in- and outputs of the mind and body – could act as a constructive agent in the multipolar processes. In this sense, intervention means participation. This attitude of activism is shaped by an after-modern insight.
